Thomas Herrera is a board-certified psychiatric mental health registered nurse with 15 years of nonprofit experience supporting cancer patients, underprivileged youth, and veterans. He is the founder of Lakeside Heroes Initiative, a nonprofit based in Alexandria, Minnesota, dedicated to promoting veteran mental health through wellness workshops, community events, and personalized support. A respected leader in his occupational communities, he inspires others through his commitment to service-driven leadership and collaborative impact. A former professional MMA fighter and lifelong advocate for service, Herrera continues to serve his community and country with compassion and resilience.

Kelly Ann Herrera, M.Ed

Deputy Director

Kelly Herrera is a dedicated educator with a Master of Education and over 10 years of experience as an elementary school teacher. Her passion for service and deep respect for the sacrifices made by military families drive her commitment to the Lakeside Heroes Initiative. Kelly brings a unique blend of patience, organization, and enthusiasm to the foundation’s outreach efforts, using her educational background to ensure programs are clear, supportive, and impactful. Through her work, she helps bridge the gap between veterans and the resources they deserve, fostering connection and healing within the community. A steadfast advocate for military families, Kelly continues to serve with heart, clarity, and unwavering dedication.

Mark John Nellermoe, B.S.

Director of Finance

Mark Nellermoe is a business leader with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from North Dakota State University. He has over 37 years of sales and executive experience with the last 21 years at Hormel Foods, where he held multiple leadership roles including vice president, and president of subsidiaries of Hormel Foods Corporation. Raised as the son of a U.S. Air Force pilot, Mark brings both personal insight and professional expertise to his work with the Lakeside Heroes Initiative. His support of veterans through life transitions is reflected in his strategic guidance and commitment to sustainable growth for the organization. Mark’s role strengthens the foundation’s mission, ensuring that those who served are met with respect, opportunity, and lasting support.

Lauri Ann Nellermoe, B.S.

Director of Communications

Lauri Nellermoe serves as our communications professional with a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Mass Communication from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She brings a valuable perspective to the Lakeside Heroes Initiative, helping amplify the voices and needs of veterans and their families. Lauri uses her communication skills to strengthen the foundation’s outreach, ensuring its mission resonates across communities. She is grateful for the sacrifices that our military members and families make everyday. Her dedication to honoring service through clarity, empathy, and connection plays a vital role in building lasting support for those who have served.

Vader Herrera, Dogtoral

Vader may be small in size, but his mission is anything but. As the only four-legged board member of the Lakeside Heroes Initiative, this spirited Pug plays a vital role in promoting mental health awareness and supporting the veteran community. Whether he’s rolling into meetings or greeting guests with his signature snort, Vader brings a unique blend of comfort, charm, and light-hearted energy to the organization’s events and outreach efforts. Equal parts therapy dog and mascot, Vader’s presence reminds everyone that healing can come in many forms including slobbery kisses and well-timed naps. Behind the wrinkles and wags is a pup with purpose, spreading smiles and support wherever he goes. Fun Fact: Vader was born on Veterans day, 11/11/20!
